It was supposed to be the Grand Canyon in the movie, but they could have shot the scene somewhere else that looked like the Grand Canyon.

Yes, most likely the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  That is the National Park area and open to the public.  Other than the North Rim and South Rim, most of the other areas of the Grand Canyon are on Indian reservations, and they will sometimes rent it out for filming, but much of that land is considered sacred to them.

I absolutely loved that movie - it was very underrated!
