Question:

Does anyone know which metal detector is best?

My husband is interested in getting a metal detector, and I thought it would make a fun Christmas gift.

The one I'm currently interested in is the GARRETT ACE 250 Metal Detector, but I am hoping that someone can offer some other insights, especially if they have personal knowledge of this or any other (affordable) type of detector.

I can get this one for about $250...I would like to spend under $350.

Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

  1. it depends on what your husband wants to do with the machine.if you are going beach detecting for coins & jewlery there are machines that are specifically made for that.years ago i had a garret ground hog a2b and it was a good beach machine. if you are going for gold the Whites Gold Master is pretty good. i think any of the more recent machines would be ok to use for a hobby. if you are serious about going for the yellow stuff, unfortunately (or fortunately) the Minelab machines blow the socks off every thing else on the market. my Gold Master will detect down to about 14" on a big target , but the minelabs go down 3 or 4 feet. i have dug a coin in the gold fields at about 24" deep. the minelabs are getting up into big bucks. these days you could probably get a sd2200 for under $1000, and they are a very good machine. i have found quite a lot of gold with my 2200.
