And by most effective I mean that they spend our money wisely and make the biggest long-term difference.

  1. www.thepencilproject.com

Perfect for a six year old to help with as a pack of one dozen pencils costs under $1 and will help 12 children get their education. Check out the website. Education is the only way out of poverty and a pencil makes a world of difference to a child that doesn't have one. This is also something that she can involve her friends/classmates with and start a whole movement!

    Best of luck!

  2. That question is impossible to answer. It's like saying "What's the best run business of all time." There is no way to make this judgment -- it's completely subjective. And how could you compare, say, an environmental charity and a children's health charity, in terms of which makes "the biggest long-term difference"?

Try narrowing your question down -- what kind of charity are you looking for, in terms of mission, size, area-served, budget, etc., and WHY are you looking for such?

  3. charitynavigator.org and charitywatch.org are two sites that rank top AMERICAN charities who donate worldwide. You can check out their criteria.

As the other poster stated, it's about impossible to determine what charity is THE most effective. Foundations who donate money are very selective about their grantees and are just as concerned as you (probably more!) about how their money is spent and managed. There are lots of strings attached to grants.

Investment magazines often feature an annual list of the charities that make the most of your donated dollars. Some  that rate consistently high are the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, CARE, Second Harvest and the March of Dimes.

Look here, for one publications list for last year:

    >Since this is going to be for her to learn about and help others, maybe a charity that benefits children in need.<

Consider the March of Dimes, Save the Children, Christian Children's Fund, or maybe even best, your local children's hospital -- local is always a good way to go, it's easier to follow up on how the charity is doing.  What a great lesson!

  4. i'm not sure which is the most, but i know for sure Unicef..or however you spell it, spends almost 100% of the money for the charity.
