  1. Qantas closed them down so that their Jetstar arm could take over the LCC operations

  2. Australian Airlines no longer exists.  I believe they were absorbed by Qantas.

Four "domestic" airlines fly into the Gold Coast -- Qantas, JetStar, Virgin Blue & Tiger.  Gold Coast is also serviced by Freedom Air (out of New Zealand).  There's probably others; but they're the main ones.

  3. it just wasnt doing the numbers.

if you do want to get to Osaka from the Gold Coast, there are three options.

Fly from Coolangata to Sydney then connect to a Jetstar flight.

Go to Brisbane then fly Jetstar to Sydney then that same plane goes through to Osaka.

Or go to Brisbane, fly Japan Airlines to Tokyo then either take the Bullet Train or fly to Osaka from Tokyo.

I dont know if thats what your asking about but if your only asking about Australan Airlines well then you answered your own question > Qantas shut them down due to poor numbers and high running costs for a low running international service.
