Does anyone know why Russia invaded Georgia in the first place?

um. there is a major oil pipeline thru there.

Georgia has a separatist group in the northern province, that group has been supported by Russia over the last decade or so. When that group became bellicose and took up arms Georgia responded with military action. When Russia saw that they came to the defense of the separatist group they support by invading Georgia.

Russia doesn't need Georgia because it is a mosquito for Russia... But Georgia attacked civilians and destroyed the capital city of South Ossetia with help of american weapon by the way, Russia's natural reaction was to protect people and to stop aggression.

I'm not the fan of Russia but in this very case activity of russian army and it's government were right, approved by the situation and pretty effective - war was stopped.

Its almost similar to the State of Florida seceding and establishing a Hispanic country, at least in Russia's respect.
