Does anyone know why Stephanie Meyer chose the titles and the pictures on her books?

They seem kinda random to me. Except Breaking Dawn. I looked up what the cover means and that one makes sense. But the titles and all the other covers just don't.

  1. Twilight is the safest time of day for vampires, so because Bella and Edward fell in love, twilight is their best time.  First it was called Forks, but the editor said that title sucked.  A descriptive word that jumped out at them both was twilight, and the name stuck.

New Moon was the darkest time of Bellas life.  The darkest night of the month is the new moon, because the moon isnt there till the niext night.  Edward left, leaving Bella in the dark.

Eclipse is when Bella realizes shes in love with Edward and Jacob.  Edward "eclipses" Jake for Bellas love.  Jake was her "personal sun", but he was "eclipsed" by Edward.

And you know what Breaking Dawn is.

PS.  Meyer only picked the cover for Twilight.  It resembles the forbidden fruit, which is Bella.  Edward has to make a choice, just like in Genisis in the Bible.

The others can have meaning if you think about it, like the dying flower symbolizes Bella without Edward, and the ribbon is Bella being torn between the boys she loves:Jake and Eddie.  The queen piece is Bella as a vampire, strong, beautiful, the pawn is her as human, weak and not important.

  2. you can look it up on wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twilight_(n...

but wiki can sometimes be wrong

  3. Directly from her site:

"Twilight was not the easiest book to title. When I started sending out queries, I called it Forks for lack of a better idea. The first thing my agent advised me was that the title was going to have to change. We played around with a lot of different titles, and nothing seemed to convey the right feel. We brainstormed through emails for about a week. The word twilight was on a list of "words with atmosphere" that I sent her. Though these words were meant to be used in combination with something else, the word twilight stood out to both of us. We decided to try it out, and, after a little adjustment time, it started to work for both of us. It isn't absolutely perfect; to be honest, I don't think there is a perfect title for this book (or if there is, I've never heard it). When I look at the titles other countries have used (examples: Germany: Bis zum Morgengrauen which is "Until Dawn" or "Bite" if you add an "s" to make it "biss" (if you look at the German book cover on the Twilight International page); Finland: "Temptation;" France: "Fascination;" and Japan, which has split it into three separate books: "The Boy Whom I Love is a Vampire," "Blood Tastes Sadness," and "The Vampire Family in the Darkness."), it seems like I might be right about that. (Both New Moon and Eclipse were much easier to title, and the titles also fit better.)

The apple on the cover of Twilight represents "forbidden fruit." I used the scripture from Genesis (located just after the table of contents) because I loved the phrase "the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil." Isn't this exactly what Bella ends up with? A working knowledge of what good is, and what evil is. The nice thing about the apple is it has so many symbolic roots. You've got the apple in Snow White, one bite and you're frozen forever in a state of not-quite-death... Then you have Paris and the golden apple in Greek mythology—look how much trouble that started. Apples are quite the versatile fruit. In the end, I love the beautiful simplicity of the picture. To me it says: choice.

The term "new moon" refers to the phase of the moon opposite a full moon. It is when the sun is on the opposite side of the moon from us and thus the bright side of the moon is not visible from earth. This is the darkest kind of night. New Moon is the darkest period of Bella's life.

It is a ruffled tulip. As for the meaning... If you've read the Twilight FAQ, you know that the apple cover had a lot of meaning for me, and I was an active part of the covering process. However, that experience is more the exception than the rule in the publishing world. Something to keep in mind if you intend to embark on a career as a writer: lots of things you might expect to be under your control are not. Covers, for example. Those are mostly up to the publisher and the marketing and sales departments. So I don't know what the tulip means—I didn't have anything to do with this one."

There's no explanation on her site for "Eclipse". I think it just shows that this is a time when Bella is confused. Thus the ribbon. She is "torn" between what she wants and needs, which have become mixed emotions in her choices. Again, I believe this shows decision.

Oh, wait... I just found this on the Twilight Lexicon...

"The broken ribbon represents choice, as in the book Bella must choose between her love for Edward Cullen, her vampire boyfriend, and her friendship/love with Jacob Black. Meyer also stated that the ribbon represents the idea that Bella can't break away completely from her human life."

    Hope I helped!!

  4. SM named Twilight, Forks! But her producer wanted Twilight, the apple means the forbidden fruit from the Bible! I think anyway!

  5. well SM had originally called Twilight Forks, but wasn't really sure about it

and she had a list of other titles and the producer chose Twilight

for the cover she didn't have any say in it, but there is meaning behind it. the apple is the forbidden fruit

new moon is called new moon because it is the darkest part of bella's life without edward. the cover she had nothing to do with

eclipse is called eclipse because jacob keeps trying block edward like the moon blocks the sun. the cover is a broken ribbon with a few strings still attached because bella wants to break apart from her human life to become a vampire but there are strings that she cannot detatch

breaking dawn is named breaking dawn for obvious reason, its a new dawn, its a new life.  and the cover SM designed because bella went from being the weakest one out there, the red pawn, to the most powerful one, the king.

    hope this helps!

  6. I was thinking that too after BD came out. I was like "These covers and the titles don't make any sense....." Like Twilight, what's with the apple? And New Moon what's with the Flower? And Eclispe what's with the ribbon? I don't understand any of the covers with the title either! Oh well she's the one that choices them. I'm kind of thinking, does she want us to be to confused??????

  7. about the twilight cover this is exactly what it says on her website

    What's with the apple?

The apple on the cover of Twilight represents "forbidden fruit." I used the scripture from Genesis (located just after the table of contents) because I loved the phrase "the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil." Isn't this exactly what Bella ends up with? 8. Twilight is the time right before dark (Bella meets Edward, but he's getting ready to leave). New Moon is the darkest point of the night (Edward leaves Bella). Eclipse means that the light is being covered up (Bella wants Edward, but Jacob interferes). Breaking Dawn is daylight (Edward and Bella are together forever). The cover of Twilight is the forbidden fruit. The cover of New Moon shows how Bella's life is wilting by losing Edward. And I don't know about Eclipse....

  9. the twilight cover symbolizes the forbidden fruit in the bible book of Genesis.  it is what edward really wants but shouldn't have. it was named twilight because of it is the ending of the first chapter of edward and Bella's relationship (and because the publishers liked it better)

the other covers, new moon and eclipse, sm didn't pick, the marketing people did, and they have no meaning to her. new moon was named because of jacob.  he is Bella's new light and helps her get through the dark night (when edward is gone). eclipse is named because of edward overpowering jacob to get bella.

breaking dawn symbolizes bella. at first she is the weakest player and then she is the most powerful and saves everyone.

  10. 99% of the time Authors have no control over titles and they NEVER have control of covers. They can throw in their ideas, but ultimately the publishers decide
