Does anyone know why game manuals recommend playing on the "smallest available tv screen"?

Everything seems to be pushing for bigger and yet this is the recommendation, on my 20" old style tube hooked to a PS3 i can't read half of what they are saying because of the resolution requirements, and yet you are telling me to go small? What?

The graphics look better on a smaller screen.  They look sharper on a smaller screen.
