Question:

Does anyone know why there are thousands of tiny flies buzzing at my back door to get into my kitchen?

This happens at night time only and there is no sign of them during the day. I don't live near a pond or a swamp or have saturated plants or rotting fruit anywhere. I do have a compost bin near by though, but when I open my door they all come flying in, in their thousands and die all over my work top. Its disgusting. They don't bite though. Please help me before they drive me mad. Ireland

  1. Insects have the tiniest hardwired brains. They do not think so much as react through instinct to a stimulus. SOMETHING is attracting the bugs and to date, only 3 things seem to work to trigger a response, light, food or s*x. Certain colors of light draw bugs like bees to nectar. And odor of food will cause a swarm. Any pheromone from a female will draw swarms of males. These bugs are not swarming because they WANT to do so, they swarm because something triggered a hardwired instinctual response. All you have to do now, is find the trigger...

  2. if you leave your lights on, then they'll be attracted to it.

that might be why its only the night time, if your lights on. (:

  3. turn your lights of they are attracted to it or put a outside light at the end of your garden they will all bugger off over there :L z

or you might  have adead animal somewhere

  4. Maybe they're attracted to the smell of your good cooking! Seriously though I have to agree with Rowlfe. Try changing or eliminating one stimulus at a time to find their target "trigger".

  5. I suggest you place the compost bin elsewhere as it maybe attracting the flies.

  6. They may be attracted to the compost bin.  I'd move it, if possible.
