    edit-

Also, I see there are 3 Private Member Stories about a Louis Joseph Menard, 1828-1895, on Ancestry.  You would have to contact the person who posted them in order to be able to read the stories, but the titles are:  Civil War Veteran, Battle of the Crater, and Danbury POW Camp.  Perhaps those might sound familiar to you...

  2. i can say without a doubt, he never trapped any Sasketchewan seals! lol. if you don't understand, look at a map. still don't get it contact me abt. purchasing some ocean front property in arizona!

  3. http://genforum.genealogy.com/menard/

First reaction when you say fur trapper, that it is possible he was French Canadian or Metis.  When I glanced at the entries at genforum, the names head that direction as well.

My only suggestion without relatives.. is that you will probably need better details..such as name/date of a known child, etc. I have seen histories and such of the better known trading companies online, so it isn't impossible that there will be some record.
