  1. Duke and Duchess of Windsor - King Edward VIII abdicated the throne of England in order to marry Walis Simpson.

The King's desire to marry a twice-divorced American with two living ex-husbands and a reputation as an opportunist caused a constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom and the Dominions, which ultimately led to the King's abdication in December 1936 to marry "the woman I love".

  2. Cleopatra and Mark Antony

The last Pharaoh of Egypt and the dashing Roman general.

    Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning

One of most romantic literary couple from the Victorian period.

    Marie and Pierre Curie

    Partners in love and science.

    Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal

Grieving emperor who built the Taj Mahal for his late wife  (Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as an expression of his love for her after she died in childbirth.)

    Abelard and Heloise

A monk and a nun whose love letters became famous.

    Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

Queen Victoria mourned her husband's death for 40 years.

    John Alden and Priscilla Mullins

One of the earliest romances in the American colonies.

  3. Anaïs Nin & Henry Miller (both writers). She wrote a few beautiful poems about him if I recall correctly.

Also, more recent are - Prince Charles & Camille... We all know the scandal with that "secret" relationship while Charles & Diana were married.... and ofcourse Johnny Cash & June Carter.  Johnny Cash's 1st wife Vivian came out with a book about their marriage a while back.  It was very interesting & had several of his love letters inside.

You could also look up Queen Victoria who married Prince Albert. After he died she went thru great morning & apparently wore black for the rest of her life.

That's all that came to mind.

  4. Maybe English Literature? But it is History also.

Jane Austen, the famous English Author, fell in love with a guy, Tom Lefroy, but they could not be together because of the Society Structure where wealth determines your marital status. Plus Jane was frowned upon because of her profession--- Female Author.

So they could not be together and she was devastated, severely heart broken, but it did not stop there. Jane later went on to write 6 or 7 of the MOST FAMOUS ENGLISH NOVELS of her time. All of them are composed and centered on TRUE LOVE, the real love that she wanted but never had.

That is pretty factual and it is based on several letters written by Jane to her sister, so it was a historical relationship that later influenced her writings which has inevitably influenced thousands upon millions of writers/ readers/ and lovers since.  Maybe this helps? Maybe not… If not try Henry the Eighth and I think the Bolyen girl, that made him divorce his wife (who was a beloved queen) and seduced him into making several other decisions that ultimately cost him a large deal of his kingdom, and the respect of his people…. Maybe this is some help; I am not a professor, just a student. And some of this maybe incorrect, so please research it.

  5. Anthony and Cleopatra

    Napoleon and Josephine

  6. Ivan IV and Anastasia Romanova of  Russia

Elizabeth I and the Duke of Essex

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan andf his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

    Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

    Laura Ingalls and Almanzo Wilder
