Question:

Does anyone live in an area where people don't recycle?

I recently moved into an area where there is no recycling drop-off area nearby. It seems like no one recycles anything around here and it drives me crazy to see the dumpsters filled with perfectly recyclable papers and plastics. I would like to start something within my apartment complex because with 118 units...well that's a lot of waste! Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone started a recycling area before?

  1. OUR school doesn't. We got some recycling bins for our dorm so that we can do something but so much plastic is wasted at our school cafeteria and noone cares.

  2. I used to live in a city that had a recycling program that cost $5 a month and was picked up every other week.  It was easy and i couldn't believe how much i was able to recycle!  Unfortunately I moved to a city where there is no recycling available.  The bureaucracy (aka city council) have been "investigating" the cost for the city to provide the service for the 2 years i have lived here.  they are finally doing an optional program, but 2,000 residencies have to sign up first and then we have to pay $8 a month.  If you contact a company called waste management (you may have heard of them!) you can find out where their closest single stream recyling bins are.  Their website is www.wm.com    I have to drive 20 minutes to get to the closest one to me, but i just fill up the back of my van with my recycleables every few weeks when i go up there.  I  am even starting to get some of my neighbors involved and we are taking turns picking it up from each other and dropping it off.  good luck!

  3. Yeah,

    The Ghetto

  4. Yes and No.

I live less than a mile from the town transfer station.  Most of the recyclables land on the road.

People are too apathetic and lazy to recycle, unfortunately.

Try to get town legislation passed to make recycling a requirement.  Fine people for throwing away recyclables.

  5. I live in a country where no one recycles

and by the way...just cause its a recycling bin does not mean things always get recycled

  6. No...we recycle in my town.  Sounds like you should get more involved in you town/city meetings.  Time to start something and that is really the best place to start.  Talk to your landlord about getting something started at your apartments.  If they do not recycle in your town and there is no nearby drop-offs it will be hard for your apartment to start anything.  Starting with the town/city meetings would be your best bet.

  7. I think you should pass out flyers and post posters. And talk about a lot of the advantages about recycling. Hopefully that will get them to recycle.

  8. I hire a garbage service that picks up my trash, then sorts thru it to take out the recyclables.

Then they sell what can be recycled, which increases their profits, and keeps my costs down.

This way I don't have to make any effort to recycle.

  9. yup. I love it!
