The little fishing village on Doc Martin. Is it really that beautiful? And is it worth while going to visit... or maybe working. Are there many jobs going there. I'm going to uni to be an Accountant, after I graduate I want to move to England. Would I be able to get a good job there?

  1. Port Issac is very beautiful, but because of it's publicity, it gets packed with tourists. I live in a smaller village that is very similar in looks, but has remained unspoilt, simply because it isn't one of the tourist "hot spots" We do get tourists, but far fewer, and it doesn't affect the local's going about their business. Jobs are always easy to find, but are mainly linked with the tourist trade, and due to the Eden Project, we find we have tourists all year around now, not just for a few months in summer.

Edit. Cornish people don't like to consider themselves as "English" but Cornwall is NOT an independant part of the British Isles, as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are, so Cornwall  IS In England, whether the Cornish like it, or not!!!

Edit... To the person above. Funny that whenever there is a major sporting event, like the World cup, the Cornish consider themselves "English" and even fly the English flag from their rooftops. (I live there, and have witnessed it on many occasions)

I'm sorry, but the Cornish appear to me to be "selective Englishmen" choosing when to be,or not to be English!!!!

As for claiming Cornwall back, please also remember WHO sells the homes to second homeowners, and "us emmits from up Country" in the first place. Something to do with greed, and pound signs, me thinks????

  2. I probablly have been there, i've been all over cornwall and aslong as you are in the coast it is most likely a beautiful place, it looks even better stood on the deck of a Royal Navy destroyer looking back on the coast.

I am determined to go camping a few times over the summer, i'm going to suggest to my mates that we go down to Cornwall, i'm sure they will be easily convinced even if it's about 350 miles away from our hometown, an 8 hour drive with plenty of stops, we all love it. It makes a nice change to see blue waters in England.

As for getting a job, the port itself wont offer much but Cornwall itself is a big place, with a university qualification you could find something worthwhile nearer Devon, the county next to Cornwall, it is just as beautiful along the south coast and contains larger towns and cities. Devon is famous for its clotted cream though, you don't want to eat too much of that, it is heavenly but fattening, great on scones with jam and a cup of tea. Devon is also home to HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy training base. Cabbies (taxi drivers) will nag young recruits or people who look like recruits (i've had it a few times), they are basically trying to get information out of people about what goes on in the base, which isn't a lot to be honest but they have tried it for ages. A night out around Plymouth, Devon is great, nightclubs, pubs, bars, plenty of matlows (navy recruits) and an amazing view. There is also a tattoo parlour who will give you free tattoos for life if you manage to get an image of a 1 pence piece tattooed to the sole of your foot in one sitting. Last time I was down there only two people had done it, both women.

Edit: Cornwall is in England despite what someone else has said. That link takes you to a website pesuading Cornish people to label themselves as Cornish instead of English on the British concensus. They would not have to carry out such a campaign if they were not apart of England. The fact that Cornwall is under English law, gorvernment and royal sovereignty means that it is within England. Not all Cornish people have a Cornish or Celtic history, they may have an Asian or African history for example. Despite the common slander that states that people of the west country are inbred, Cornish people, like anyone else, often make families from people from different counties in England. Not everyone wants the independance. Why be apart of a small country when you can be apart of a wealthier nation. England is not a country? That is going beyond 'technicialities'.

Cornwall may have a flag but it is a county flag, not a country flag. Cornwall is not the only county to be based on tribal division and leadership. If Cornwall is a country, so is Lancashire (my county), Humberside, Cumbria, West Yorkshire or Greater Manchester.

  3. Cornwall is not in England!!! grrr (http://www.cornishnotenglish.com and http://www.duchyofcornwall.eu)

Yes Port Isaac is that beautifull but the people arent backwards as they are portrayed in Doc Martin.

You'll find it hard to get jobs in places like Port Isaac but there are a plethora of more stunning places around Cornwall where it is easier to get accountancy jobs.

    Good Luck.

Yeah, if you read the links you'll find out that it's being illegaly annexed and controled.

But there's a lot of controversy over it now with nearly a majority of Cornish people in favour of gaining our home power back. It's the same situation as Wales had in the 60's and at some point in the next few years the Cornish situation will boil over as it's already coming to a head now.

    It's actualy realy fascinating.

the political history and the way Celtic (not just Cornish) history has been covered up in the curriculum.

Bare in mind that maps aren't the law and governments aren't honest.

    ------------------

Wales, Scotland, England and N.Ireland are NOT independent countries. They are constituent nations and Cornwall infact has more devolutionary power than England does. England in the strictest sense isn't in existence and doesn't have a parliament. Cornwall does have a parliament and has never been part of England. As stated in the Charter of Pardon (1508) by Henry VII, Cornwall will always be entitled to acts of Veto against Westmister and will never be a part of England unless handed over by the Stannary Parliament.

The problem is that people like to voice their opinion without reading up on the facts and unfortunately the poster below me is example of that. They seem open minded to it but once you know about the Cornish situation through research it is undeniable that it is a seperate entity to England. They are hard solid facts and can't be argued, hence how you can tell who has or has not done their research on the subject.

The fact that the poster thinks that the other constituent nations are independent is testimony to their lack of knowledge or research.

A poor comeback. Selective Englishmen? As i said not all Cornish people are aware of their history. You appear to be typicaly ignorant and defensive and don't seem to care to actualy learn about this situation.

I consider myself Cornish and not English but I support England in the world cup because I can't support the Cornish. England is our nearest country and why shouldn't I, we should support each other rather than be against each other.

I support England in tournaments because they are our neighbouring nation and I have nothing against them.

Come up with something a little more solid if you feel that you would like to challenge the Cornish situation.

Yahoo answers isnt the place for a debate so go to http://www.cornwall24.co.uk (don't worry there are people on there who are likeminded with you so It's not throwing you in with the lions.)

I have the same display name on there if you want to carry on this debate.

"Greed and pound signs" are you really surprised seeing as we are one of the poorest regions in Europe?

Once one of the richest nations until Westminster succesfully stopped our Kaolin and Tin mining through Primary, Secondary and Tertiary means.

We are messed over a lot and are becoming hugely frustrated with it, hence the recent boost in nationalism.

    EDIT::

There is one thing you need to know to disprove the Cornwall is in England myth and that is the charter of Pardon.

In 1508 the King signed the charter of pardon in gratitude for the Cornish helping in the civil war (plus a large sum of money) which stated that Cornwall would never be a part of England until it was handed over... that has not happened.

There is no such thing as an English currency and just because we use it does not mean that we are a part of England. It is a british currency and all of the nations within the UK use it. cornwall has more constitutional rights than England and also ticks more boxes on the United Nations definition of a nation.

England is not a country, neither are Wales, Scotland or northern Ireland. Isle of Man is, Cornwall isn't.

By the same definition that England isn't a country, Cornwall is a nation.

  4. yes

  5. There might not be too many jobs in the village itself, but there's no reason why you couldn't get a job somewhere else in Cornwall.
