Well I was wondering if anyone has made a w16 aircraft engine

I mean we've already made a W16 for a car (Bugatti Veyron) why not (or if not) make a W16 aricraft engine?

  1. why are you comparing cars to planes that car was designed to go fast it goes faster then formula 1 cars it drinks a 200L tank in 12 minutes

its an 8.0L engine and its four turbos probably running at 14.7 psi each make that engine a 40.0L engine

  2. They made a W24...

The W3420‑23 is the engine used in the Fisher P‑75.

W3420 combined two Allison V12  V1710s into one engine forming a W.. with 2 crankshafts driving a common reduction gear.

  3. The days of large multicylinder aircraft engines are over.  The most cylinders an aircraft engine commonly has any more is six.  Still, the engines are large (between 470 and 580 cubic inches).

Most aircraft use air cooled engines since the liquid cooling system adds weight and reduces reliability.  The W16 would be impossible to air cool.

That being said there were some weird configurations made during WWII.  There was the Rolls Royce Vulture, an X24 made from two V12s.  It was terrible.  A bit better was the Napier Sabre horizontal H24 used on the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest.

Flea, you might be interested to know that the P-75 was basically a bogus aircraft to keep Fisher from being conscripted to making war materiel.

  4. Two things, turboprops are lighter and easier to maintain, and a W engine would have a very large cross section that would create a h**l of a lot of drag.

  5. There is nothing magical about adding more cylinders to an aircraft engine.  All it does is add more weight and complexity, when the opposite is more desirable.  Any modern aircraft that needs the power of a a 16 cylinder engine would more likely have a turbo-prop.
