Question:

Does anyone make powered, outdoor speakers that I can plug directly into my iPOD that will be truly loud?

I am looking for a simple solution to provide loud, relatively good quality sound for backyard BBQ parties. I am willing to pay good money (around $200-$300) for good speakers. I prefer to hook my iPOD directly to the speakers and avoid buying a receiver if possible. I used to own a pair of powered Accoustic Research speakers that I plugged into my iPOD, but I eventually blew them out and they were not exactly made for the outdoors. Trying to purchase good quality speakers always seems like a herculean challenge.

  1. Hi There:

Your problem is simple, you want something that's loud, but you do not wish to have a receiver.  The solution is pretty simple.  You got 2 choices.

    1.  This is the cheapest way.  Buy a pair of computer speakers with a subwoofer, or a 2.1 set up.  I would recommond go with Creative Labs, Logitechs or Altec Lansing.  The Creative Labs I-Trigue seriers are great! Or try Altec Lansing VS4221, this unit come with a remote, you should be able to find it for about $100.  With a 2.1, you won't be dispointed because the sub will help you a lot!

    2.  This is a more permante solution, but best sounding.  I know you don't want a receiver, but in order to get good and loud sound, you NEED a receiver to push your speakers.  There is just no other way.  Most speakers do not have enough build in amplification.  You can get a good stereo receiver for $80 - $150 and get a pair of Boston Accoustic outdoor speakers, or Polk, or Bose.  Those are loud, and they are real good.  Boston ones starts around $100 per pair, Bose is about $200.  If you pair a mid range receiver and a pair of Boston, you can stay well under $300!

Good Luck and Enjoy the music while BBQing!
