  1. The Pros use the stance and footwork that goes best for the shot they have and want to hit.  Stances include Closed, Neutral, Forward, Semi-Open, and Open.

David Bailey produced a dvd/guidebook from studying pros footwork and the basic mechanics of the body.  There are 15 different shots the pros hit and they include all the stances listed above.

Roger Federer is a good example as he hits Closed, Neutral, Semi-Open, and Open regularly.

  2. Most pros play with a variety of forehand stances.  Top pros circumstances dictate whether they use an open, closed or semi open stance.  Roger Federer uses a closed stance when he has time or the circumstances allow it.  Nikolay Davydenko is the most prominent person in the Top 10 who uses a closed stance.

  3. Roger Federer.  His best forehands are usually closed stance, when he's not rushed.  it is hard to read which direction he's hitting.

Closed or open stance are not either-or, when the player has time, i am sure he would like to hit with full force with weight moving forward.

most players play both stance, hardly exclusively closed or open.  depends on the situation.
