Yes it is a real degree, and it is really hard to obtain from what I hear. However I do not personally know anyone that has every part of it, just bits and pieces.

Anyway I am just wanting to pick your brain.

Which college did you graduate with it from? How long did it take you? What would you do differently? TELL ME EVERYTHING. I am very interested and I am considering going to school for it, but I must know more.

  1. First off, you'll need to clarify your question a little.  Are you looking for a PhD in Horse Behavior, or a PhD in counseling/clinical psychology with an emphasis on using horses as a therapeutic method?  Both programs exist, and are very, very different.

As far as getting a degree in horse behavior goes, there aren't many places that offer it.  This is in part because it's a sort of hyper-specialization, and in part because there isn't a strong accreditation body for it.  Without such a body, you aren't likely to receive much respect from anyone unfamiliar with the specific program you graduated from.  Alternatives you might consider include a degree in Experimental Psychology, or pursuing formal horse or exotic animal training programs.

As far as finding one nearby, I'd first suggest figuring out where you'd like to work with your degree.  Is there a program that you're interested in being a part of that's hiring for PhD Equine Psychologists?  If so, they can probably point you toward a school they recognize.
