Question:

Does anyone own a cockapoo/cockerpoo?

I am looking to buy a dog and am interested in the cockapoo breed. My mum is a very clean person so i want a low-shedding dog which i understand the cockapoo is but i have read that they should not be left alone for long amounts of time. The house would be empty from about 8.30 to 3.30, however as i am going into 6th form i would be home in the middle of the day every now and then. I was wondering if anyone owned a cockapoo and had any advice as to whether this breed is for me. Every other quality the breed has is perfect, I am just concerned about this. Thanks for any advice!

  1. c**k a what

  2. There is nothing wrong with owning a crossbreed, you can get mixed breeds from the dogs trust so have a look there. If you get one from a breeder check that both parents have had all relevant tests for their breed. I would not leave a dog home alone for seven hours though as that is just too long and is unfair.

  3. cooko clock?

  4. c**k-a-poos are not a "Breed" they are mixes.

  5. If you want a mutt, please adopt one from the shelter.

Just because a dog is half- poodle, does not mean it doesn't shed.

Many breeds are low shedding dogs, so google it! Any dog can be left alone for up to 8-9 hours as an adult, but puppies need to be let out to go potty every few hours until they are old enough to 'hold it." Puppies take a LOT of time, consider getting an adult!

    ADD-

If you want a "perfect" dog, you need to spend time training it. ALL dogs need training! Most dogs end up in shelters because the owner didn't train them, then got frustrated with normal puppy behaviors. (Biting, jumping, barking, etc.)

Also, make sure you buy from a responsible breeder. Dogs are expensive, if you get one who's parents have been tested for genetic defects before breeding. This is very important. My little shih tzu only lived a year before suffering major genetic defects, despite a normal healthy first year. Her parents are still alive and "healthy." If you don't want to spend a lot of money on a purebred, look in a shelter! There are many purebreds and mixes!

ADD #2-- you have 7 great answers, why are you ignoring advice of experienced dog owners, and listening to the one who isn't!?!? Her advice is awful, anyway! You do NOT leave out water all day, or you will never potty train the dog! Offer water every so often, and if the dog isn't interested, wait longer the next time. If s/he laps it up, then you know to offer it sooner the next time. "Cockapoos" are NOT a quality breed, they are MUTTS! Any mutt will do, if that's what you want!

  6. "Cockapoos" are a mixed breed. They're not a breed. They're just mixes. Mutts. (I use that term affectionately). With this being said, you can not predict how they'll turn out. They're all different. They could take after mom, after dad, or any combination of both. There's no guarantee. The best you can do to guess whether or not this particular mix will be good for you is to research cocker spaniels and poodles. Realize you can get any traits from either breed. You may not necessarily get the best of both breeds.

Cocker spaniel/poodle mixes do shed, even with the poodle in them. They may shed less, but again, no guarantees. No dog should be left alone for a very long period of time. Smaller dogs tend to be more clingy to their owners, so it's not recommended to leave them alone for long. I think 7 hours is reasonable. Many people work 8 hour jobs, and their dogs do just fine. With any dog, you just have to get them used to being home alone.

Please keep in mind that NO responsible breeder would ever intentionally cross breeds. The purpose of breeding is to improve the breed. When you cross breeds, you don't improve anything. Please do not support anyone who breeds these mixes on purpose. If you're really interested in this particular mix, check out your local shelters and rescues. You may just find a cocker spaniel/poodle mix in need of a good home in your area. There's nothing wrong with a purebred cocker spaniel or a purebred poodle, either. Have you considered getting a purebred poodle?

I don't own a cocker spaniel/poodle mix, but my friend has one. She's more the size of a cocker spaniel. She doesn't shed too, too much. She's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. She loves other dogs and people. She loves being with her owners, and is a great dog. However, keep in mind that not every dog is the same. This is just my experience with a cocker spaniel/poodle mix.

  7. If you're purchasing this dog from a shelter, then its a great dog.

Don't EVER buy a mixed breed from a pet store or from a breeder. In fact, NEVER buy a dog from a pet store.

Cocker Spaniels shed, poodles do not. When you mix the two together, you have a 50/50 chance of having a dog that sheds or having a dog that doesn't.

Mixed breeds are unpredictable with temperaments and requirements for grooming.

If you want a low shedding dog, get a poodle from a reputable breeder or a shelter. Toy poodles are eight to eleven pounds in weight, are great family dogs, and are EXTREMELY intelligent.

Puppies require constant attention. They need to be let out every half hour to every hour when they are a month to two months old. For every month the dog is, is how often the dog needs to be let out (three months= every three hours).

  8. Do not buy a mutt from a 'breeder'. These people care not about health testing they just want to line their pockets. No responsible dog owner would purposely (or accidentally) cross breed.

There are many purebreds that do not shed outward (Poodles, Shih Tzu etc.). A Cocker Spaniel sheds therefore it is not guaranteed that you'll get a 'Cockapoo' that doesn't shed.

If you want to buy a dog from a responsible breeder find a purebred that fits your lifestyle, not a mutt that could have a mountain of heath problems due to irresponsible breeding - buying from these people encourages them to create more.

No dog should be left alone for long periods of time, especially not a puppy (2 hours max).

  9. I have heard of a bird called a Cockatoo but never a cockapoo.

  10. I have one! She hardly ever sheds and is very sweet. I leave her behind a baby gate all day in my laundry room with a doggie door  and shes fine. She;s a great lap dog. I reccomend one for anyone. I reccomend leaving a lot of water out all day too.

  11. It is not a breed! It is a mutt - nothing wrong with that except you cannot predict whether you will get one which doesn't shed, whether it will have the temperament of a Cocker or the temperament of a Poodle!

No reputable breeder would deliberately cross 2 perfectly good breeds for the sake of puppies with a stupid name!
