I recently bought the Vocarb 5000 from AllerAir. Everytime I try using it, the room gets extremely hot and the air smells weird. My eyes also begin to itch. Could mine be malfunctioning? Is there any danger? Or, from experience, can anyone tell me if it is normal for such air purifiers to heat a room up, or perhaps introduce an odd odor or something into the air.

As the air purifier is brand new, there should be nothing in the filters. Is it typical of new products, particularly electronics and things like air purifiers, to emit such odors when new? The fact that my eyes itch when around is what has me pensive, and it isn't just me. When somebody else was in the room, there eyes itched also.

Is there any possibility, at all, that the air purifier is putting out something toxic into the air? Could it be a health hazard?

  1. I have a Kenmore room air cleaner with a HEPA filter and a carbon pre-filter, plus an Ionizer.  If yours has an Ionizer, it could be the ozone that you are smelling.  Any air that blows by your face whether side ways or from the ceiling will dry your eyes eventually if sitting there long enough.  Verify if in fact your unit has an ionizer.  If not, then you have another problem.  Are your filters installed properly per the user's manual?  Room purifier only pulls air in through the two filters and expels it out through the top.  It doesn't add anything to this process, well, mine doesn't anyway.
