  1. 1st 2 answers just silly. Easy to diversify with etfs but I also include some closed end funds for value + a few mutuals.  http://www.etfconnect.com/ is the best resource. I own ADX GAM BCF BDV GCH & other closed ends. etfs- PBW EPI EAF PZA & others. They are transparent & useful.

  2. 2 things wrong here.  1st ETF's are volatile. Moreso than regular equities. Secondly, you should diversify a protfolio into segments.

  3. For my long term investment portfolio I own only ETF's. ETF's are baskets of stocks that mirror specific indices so they cannot possibly be MORE volatile than the underlying equities and they have MORE diversification, not less, than individual companies. Also ETF's are about as transparent as can be due to SEC regulations governing disclosures of holdings. So to sum it up I have no idea what the previous posters were talking about but they are dead wrong.

I use only ETFs in the place of mutual funds because they have lower management costs and are easier to buy and sell. Not to mention that 80% of mutual funds cant beat their markets.

I own many ETF's, Small cap value: VBR, large cap value: VTV, Mid cap value: VOE, REITS: VNQ, Europe: EFA, Pacific Rim: EPP, Latin America: ILF, Emerging markets: EEM, US bonds: TIP, Foreign Bonds: BWX, Private equity: PSP, Commodities: GLD, SLV and I used to own GSG but sold it recently. I also own more US equities in these ETFs DIA, MDY, PWY, PWV, and EZY.

Overall I try to get exposure to as many markets as possible, except for growth ETF's since they histtorically underperform value. I can tell you from personal experience that this type of portfolio is very low risk and over long periods of time easily beats the benchmark S&P.

  4. Why would anyone put all their eggs in one basket that is unregulated and non transparent?
