Does anyone remember the crash of flight 587 ever being in the news?

I was just reading online about a plane crash that happened in November of 2001 of American Airlines flight 587 when it was leaving JFK in NYC.

It was supposedly the second worst plane crash ever in the USA....I was in sixth grade at the time and have no recollection about this ever being in the news or anything...

Anyone remember this happening?

  1. Yes, it sort of got lost among all the other news at the time, being 2 months after 9/11 and all. At first people thought it might be terrorism, but when it quickly turned out to be pilot/mechanical error.

You're right, it wasn't in the news much. I only remember it because I'm a news junkie and interested in disasters so I watched a documentary on the investigation of the crash.

    God rest their souls.

  2. I think the plane's rudder and engines fell off.

The plane crashed into Belle Harbor in Queens, NY, killing everyone on the plane and a few people on the ground.

  3. I remember it happened only a couple of months after 9/11 and that there seemed to be a collective sigh of relief that the crash wasn't terrorist related. No matter what the circumstances were, it was no less a tragedy than 9/11.

  4. Yes, it was on the news pictures and everything...I flew out of NYC to La a week later on the same type of aircraft...The plane was sooo silent until we got to crusing altitude..you could feel the tension....so lots of people remember, probably more so in NYC

  5. Woah!! I've never heard of that. I will have to look it up.
