I'm tagging pictures from a school trip I took to Washington DC and New York a couple years ago, but I can't remember the name of one of the memorials. I think its from the Vietnam war, its the statue of the 3 soldiers putting up an American flag. Does anyone remember the name??

  1. It's probably the Marine Corp memorial.

  2. I guess you weren't paying attention or took notes on your field trip, huh?!

  3. It the Marine Corps War Memorial.  Check the web site below

  4. the iwo jima memorial and it is actually six men five marines and one navy corpsman

IRA HAYES PIMA INDIAN ARIZONA died in the 50's possible alchol related died on reservation of exposure

MIKE STRANK PITTSBURGH PENN killed on iwo jima afew days after the flag raising

FRANKLIN SOUSELY NEAR ASHLAND KY killed on iwo jima a few days after the flag raising

HARLAN BLOCK TX killed on iwo jima a few days after the flag raising

RAINY GAGNON NJ died in the 70's in nj (heart attack)

JOHN "DOC" BRADELY USN APPELTON WI wounded on iwo a few days after the flag raising died in the early 90's in wisconsin possibly cancer buti cant remember

you just can't see all six butif you count the hands you will see eleven on the pole andone hand in the air just as it come off the pole that hand is mike stranks if i remember his other hand is resting on top of one of the other marines possibly franklin souselythe figure in the for ground (closest to the base of the flag is harlan block and the onewith the profile is that of john bradley also the one next to harlan is ira hayes and the last figure is rainy gagnon

if you ever get back there again look at nthe memorial you will not find a single name except that of the sculptor this was done because the memorial was built to honour all those who fought on the Island and not the flag raisers it nsimply reads "Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue"

just one more bit of info i forgot to put in here and that that harlan block was misidentified when the photo appeared in the papers ira hayes did try to tell them that it was block and not the one they had identified as the flag raiser he was on Mt. surabachi but was not one of the six when Ira saw him on surabachi he was wearing his soft cover where the one in the picture was wearing his steel pot (helmet). and before anyone thinks i got this from the film flags of our fathers watch the movie and you will see most of this info is not in their i am a WWII buff and former marine who had the priviledge of being on Iwo Jima in 1982 or maybe it was 83. Iwo jima saw more medal of honor recipients for the marine corps than all the restof WWII if i remember right there were twenty seven medals given in three weeks of fighting ( hence the inscription on the memorial "UNCOMMON VALOR WAS A COMMON VIRTUE") and something like 83% of the fifty thousand plus marines that landed on the island were either wounded or killed of john bradleys unit which included the other five flag raisers i think only four men survived the battle jsut think about that for a minute his unit had probably 100 plus men in it and only four survived

  5. the three soldiers of Viet Nam Monument

  6. I think you're talking about the Iwo Jima Monument from World War II.  It has three Marines and one Navy Corpsman putting up the flag.
