  6. It was a little before my time, but for the benefit of youngsters here, the Princess Victoria was one of the first roll-on roll-off car ferries, and operated between Stranraer in Scotland and Larne in Northern Ireland.

55 years ago yesterday, on 31st January 1953 she was caught up in the Great Storm which later went on to devastate eastern England and the Netherlands in the next 24 hours. At 0946 the Princess Victoria radioed that she was hove to and out of control, with her cargo shifting and water entering the ship. An SOS was radioed at 1032 and the order to abandon ship was given at 1400. She went down with the loss of 133 lives, including the Deputy Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Maynard Sinclair, and the Member of Parliament for North Down, Sir Walter Smiles. There were only 40 survivors.

The storm also wrecked many trawlers in the fishing fleet off western Scotland, with over 100 more lives being lost at sea. The storm went on to create a storm surge which ran down the North Sea, overwhelming flood defences in East Anglia, the Thames estuary, and the Netherlands. The official death toll was 1835 people killed in the Netherlands, 307 in the UK, and 28 in Belgium.
