  1. I agree with Imaka.  In the beginning Bobby Fischer certainly aroused excitement over the game but I can't really think of much else that he did for chess that wasn't completey self-serving.  Had he gone the way of Susan Polgar by being a great teacher or the way of Kasparov and Josh Waitzkin by endorsing chess computers and software He would have contributed far more to the "sport".  Bobby Fischer played chess like nobody else...but that's about it.  Apart from that he was pretty much an a--hole.

  2. With great genius comes insanity.

  3. No, I don't.  I think his eccentricities sort of took over his life, and also how people saw him, and that is what many people remember now.  There is  no doubt that he was a great chess player, but he became his own worst enemy in many ways.

  4. first of all good morming to all that read this.I am from the era that Bobby Fischer is from ,and although he never played Karpov he did have his reasons.True he did want to revert back to the Stientz rules but as the world champion at that time the Russians were kind of stacking the deck so to speak .In that if one had the lead in the tournament and was playing another Russian then a draw would be offered to insure that he could maintain his lead.Spassky and Keres both agree with Fischer on that point.  As for Fischers style of play he would only play for a win.not a draw.true he was against the politics of chess and the U.S. but who isn't after the Bush v.Gore election since when do we the people allow a person to win only because the electorial college says so well I don't want to go into that.Fischer was a great player and I believe he was bipolar in some regards. And I respect him for his chess and for the first U.S.player to become world champion and at this point I don't think I'll ever see another true American become champion in my life time again.
