  1. Amalgam fillings are perfectly safe... or else they wouldn't be available. They're more sturdy than a composite (tooth colored) filling, they'll last longer, there's not as much flexing... they're just kind of ugly. The mercury content in an amalgam filling is so minute that, really, there is no worry.

  2. Don't eat Sushi!!!

There is more mercury in that fish than you will EVER get from a filling....

These fillings have a 100 year history of no problems, and this small minority of radical people are creating a hysteria...

    They are safe....period.

  3. As a dental hygienist, I don't believe any of the current dental materials are the best, but they are safe for most people under proper circumstances. First, amalgam contains mercury. Obviously, it would be better if we had an option without this. However, the newer versions come premixed which makes them much safer. Older techniques involved hand mixing the mercury in which exposed people to too much. Once the mercury is set, it shouldn't leak into the system. It is probably not a good idea to have put in or removed amalgam fillings during pregnancy or in children under 6 years old. The white/composite fillings may not be any better though. These fillings contain the same material found in plastic baby bottles that has caused the recall for those. They also are thought to release estrogenic effects. So, basically dentistry has no really good options right now. However, the options available seem to be safe for most people. Yes, the amalgam fillings do usually last longer in years, but they are not as pretty.

  4. YOU ACTUALLY INGEST MORE MERCURY FROM SEA FISH THAN FROM DENTAL MERCURY -- JUST SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT. 97% OF PEOPLE HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IT.
