Question:

Does anyone think that clubs made from components can match the brand named ones?

I build clubs and have found that I can produce a quality product cheaper than brand name and they are just as functional. What do you think?

  1. I used to build also.  Unless you are a single digit handicap, I don't think you will see a difference using components that are made correctly for you.

The biggest difference I ever noticed was in the grooves on the irons.  I don't know if that has changed in the last few years.  The name brands seem sharper than clones particularly on the wedges.

I read the above magazine article and don't believe it.

  2. Yes, as long as quality componets are used in the clubs.

  3. I have built all of my clubs and they play just as well as the clubs that my friends play. I use quality components (no clones or knock-offs) and get quality results.

  4. Mr. Ohio is misinformed.  Components does not equal knockoffs.  Companies like Golfsmith research, design, test, and manufacture their own brands of components to the same tolerances and in the same foundries as major OEM brands.  Maltby is probably the same way, but I dont' know as much about them.  Knockoffs are substandard quality and are only made to look like something else without regards to playability.

Ben Crenshaw, Scott Verplank, JL Lewis, and others either are playing or have played Golfsmith brands on tour.

I'll never play a club that I didn't build myself.  I guarantee you my set is just as good quality as any other OEM and is more suited to my game than most.

  5. so what clubs do yuo have to offer. looking for some new blades for myself with stiff shafts and 11/2 wraps under the right hand 1" long 1degree upright and lofts less 2degrees standard Taylor made

  6. I agree completely! I have built a Maltby set of irons over this offseason, and I couldn't be more pleased. To quote a review I read once and have found to be 100% true, "every characteristic of these clubs are there for a purpose, it's not for looks"

  7. Dennis -

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but knockoff clubs are not manufactured to the same tolerances and specifications as OEM.

Therefore you may have a 6 iron head that has the loft of an 8 iron, or vice versa.....

There was an article a few months ago in Golf Digest about just this topic....they came to same conclusion.....you get what you pay for. I wouldn't chance it...

  8. Can I answer this with a question...

Do you purchase heads, shafts, grips from the major manufacturers?  (I guess this also asks, CAN someone purchase top of the line components? - Particularly, the heads as I know that anyone can buy new shafts and grips.)

Assuming the answer is yes, then I would say that at minimum an equal product can be made, and at best, a more varied/customizable product is possible.

What I would not expect is that the major brand would warranty the product the same.

  9. i've built several drivers, woods and putters, and for the most  been happy with them all and if not your only out like 15-60$ so its not as bad as like a 500$ driver you can't hit

  10. Sure - as long as the clubs are well made - then they are as good as brand named clubs.

We all know that some of the money used to buy brand named goods goes on exactly that - THE NAME !
