Question:

Does anyone think that the twilight versus anti-twilight thing has gone too far?

This isn't so much of a question as a rant, but I'd like to hear your opinions. I'm all for people expressing that they love/hate twilight and backing it up with reasons WHY, but I think the name calling (I was recently called a b***ch for criticizing Stephenie Meyer's writing) and insults (there are lots of people who assume twilight readers haven't read anything else) and other things of this nature is taking it too far. It's just a book, right?

So the question is: Why do you hate or love Twilight (and give REAL reasons. Edward/Jacob is hot and they suck do not count as reasons.) and why can't people accept that everyone has a right to voice their opinion without being shot down?

  1. First of all, this thing hasn't gone too far because of the haters, but because of the obsessed fans. 90% of the topics here are about Twilight and there is reference to it even on topics completely unrelated to the saga. "Who cares about this bullshit? Read Twilight, the best book ever."

See, this is why some people assume Twilight fans have never read anything else. Because they state it is the best book ever and I've frequently seen Ms. Meyer compared to Shakespeare and Austen by fans. I'm not saying it is a horrible book, but to call it "the best ever" simply denotes ignorance, I'm sorry.

Ok, so back to the topic. What really and truly bothers me about Twilight is that it is incredibly overrated, by fans as well as critics. It's a positive thing that more people are reading, but the fact that nobody on these boards has EVER in their entire LIVES heard of Orhan Pamuk(winner of the Nobel Prize in 2006) saddens me and goes to show that maybe they aren't reading books of the best quality. As an author who is about to be published for the first time later this year or the next(but in Romania, not the US), I can't help but feel worried that the media promotes mediocrity. Not that I have anything against Stephenie Meyer as a person or an author. She, maybe is not mediocre, but her work is. This is why:

    1. Weakly developed characters. This book is the most eloquent of examples of Mary Sue meets Gary Stu. The main character, although clearly described as being PLAIN attracts 5 boys in her very first day at a new school, by doing nothing but walking into a room. Aside from the fact that, even for a beautiful girl, that's a tad far-fetched for the very first of days, Bella is also extremely shy. For boys nowadays beauty=accesibility. It might have been the classical case of teenagers underestimating the way they looked but SM has explained that she is a magnet for the opposite s*x despite the fact that she isn't beautiful. Doesn't everybody wish they were Bella? Also, she is incredibly modest, mature, shy, well-bread, perceptive and has no apparent flaw apart from the fact that she attracts bad luck and is incredibly clumsy. Sensational. In all my days, I have never encountered such a complex character. In many ways, she is similar to Austen's Elizabeth Bennet, who is all those things except clumsy and shy.(Even the name's the same) Of course, for her time, Lizzie was an incredibly brave and strong woman, whilst Bella is clingy and weak.

Which brings us to the subject of anti-feminism. Bella is terrible. She acts like a polygamist's\mormon's daughter. Ties herself to a much(much much) older man from a very young age, has no thoughts of a future or career, cares exceedingly from her parents and has no other hobbies, nothing to employ her besides the boys in her life and cooking for her father. When Edward leaves, she gets depressive. She has no other friends, so it doesn't bother her to be constantly with him, although they don't exactly have much in common, aside from the fact that he's beautiful and she smells appealing. A lot. Moreover, I understand that they're both mature, but a little just an ounce of real teenage dramas would have made it somehow more down-to-earth. Bella should have had a vice, smoking, drinking, prescription pills(after all, her parents are divorced, mom gets remarried yadda yadda. Depression could have been inserted here), she should wish to go out, like a normal teen. She acts like a housewife at 17! It disgusts me.

As for the marvelous, the incredible, the oh-so-hot Edward Cullen, Gary Stu's written all over him. At first he's a haughty Mr. Darcy, then he turns into the perfect adoring, caring boyfriend that would kill himself if he lost Bella and that sneaks into her room to watch her sleep. Abusive relationship alert! Oh, don't get me wrong..I would've adored a book like that. If Edward was just a teensy bit more human(in literature, vampires rarely have superstrength. speed ok, but why need to be the incredible Hulk? God), a depiction of a more genuine abusive vampire-human relationship would've been made it a more serious book.

And the thing about SM is that she doesn't openly write about these controversial subjects, she merely implies them. Abusive relationships, antifeminism, rough s*x(please, give us the whole scene, otherwise 12 year olds will think it's ok to wake up with bruises after s*x), pedophilia, pedophilia, pedophilia. Why three times? Bella and Edward, Clare and Quil, Jacob and Renesmee.

You want to write about pedophilia? Even better...the book is starting to sound like a Pulitzer Prize Winner. Implying it's an ok thing to force a little girl into a relationship that is disgusting when she grows up only because no woman in her right mind would refuse this co-dependent sickness disguised as love? Nope...NO. Don't contradict me here. Clare and Quil are an allusion to Clare Quilty, a perverted play-writer who had orgies with uneraged minors in "Lolita". Wa

  2. aw..were you offended by me?

    get. over. it.

  3. I kind of think its dumb that you guys are arguing over a book. Seriously, some people like it and some people don't its an OPINION! I think that people should feel free to express their opinions, if someone disagreeswith that opinion then they have the same right to express theirs. But everyone should show respect for others' opinions.

    To answer your question:

I really like Twilight. It is very well written, and it kept me interested. I don't read much so if a book can keep me interested i think its a good book.

  4. I wouldn't go as far as calling "twilight-lovers" names, i'm not as immature as those who do.

I just dislike it because, i hate romantic stories, also, most readers of Twilight are teen girls in love Edward, calling Bella, a fictional character names. Seriously!

    It is overrated too much,

When i was in my teens i was reading books by Torey Hayden, Dean Koontz, Dave Pelzer, Stephen King, and such. I really don't understand why they choose to read books like Twilight.

  5. I think it just fine people should be able to voice the opinion, but they cant expect to be able to trash Stephenie Meyer and not expect to get trashed right back if you dish it you cant take it there both just opinions so it doesn't really matter. Me i love Twilight and Stephenie Meyer but i don't trash anyone either way.

  6. no i don't think it's gone to far....... I hate  twilight

woooo go Harry Potter ;) okay so that WAS a bit pathetic but oh well

  7. I didn't mind the book- it was a fun light story, but the idea people seem to have got is that Meyer is a good writer. This is because they are under the belief that describing every single thing in the book makes someone a good writer, and using a thesaurus for every single word.

You don't need to give your character a personality when he is vampy-boy-toy and appear to be preaching 'no s*x until you're married so marry early'. Unlike the readers of this series, the characters have no hormones.

Not having an original plot is not that fair- most books are an amalgam of other books.

  8. I love Twilight, for reasons unknown. I love the emotions I feel when reading it. Sometimes I just can't help but smile when reading it. That's when I know I'm reading a good book; when it can bring out some kind of emotion in me.

And Stephenie Meyer's writing doesn't suck. Everyone that says that has only read Twilight. She has The Host, too. And Stephenie said so herself, "Twilight isn't a well-written book, but it has a great storyline." Her reason to first writing book was because of a dream, she didn't care whether the writing would come out bad. It was just meant to portray what she had already seen.

I, personally, feel like Stephenie is a GREAT author and deserves more cred. :]

    [edit]

It was after the main concept was already built that Smeyer decided to look into other classics for a more refined plot. After! The annoying fans I can understand. They do get annoying... it's true. But any obsession is annoying to me, anyway.

And furthermore, The Host might be similar to other, already made, stories... but it is completely original. Anyone who completely read the book would know that. :]

  9. Personally the series in my opinion failed because of Breaking Dawn. She told her readers Vampires could never have children. And Bella's pregancy when she was drinking blood really made her unrelatable to me.

I would never go as far to insult Stephenie because I dont like her series anymore...I just moved on and got over it. In my opinion if you hate Twilight don't say anything about it.

  10. i really like the Twilight Saga, because it is just such a good book, some parts keep you on the edge of your seat, some make you cry, and some are just so funny, and happy. it is just a good series!

  11. i really like the twilight series because i like stephenie meyer a lot. as far as i have heard she is a good writer. normally i am interested in vampires and all those paranormal stuffs, so i like this book a lot. there is also a bit of sentiment and omance involved, so i like this book.

  12. Personally I love the Twilight saga. I also loved The Host (another one of Stephenie Meyer's books) And I loved them all because she had a creative and unique storyline. Plus I think the way she writes is fantastic! Everything is told in great detail, and you can really get a visual for everything that's going on. I always love a lot of detail when I read, and some people don't, mostly because with that much detail they feel it is slow moving, and boring. But I feel the contrary. I feel you don't get nearly as much of the story without all the detail. Think about it, if Twilight was around 150 pages or so, do you think it'd be nearly as good? I don't think so. Not in the least.

  13. I totally agree. I love twilight and I think its just a booka and people who dont like it can have their opo=inions but shouldnt insult people and neither should us twilight lovers. I think we should be at pece in the twilight area.

  14. Yes it's gone too far.  I did like the books.  They were easy to read and I just love to read.  But, this whole obsesser/hater thing is rediculous!  I mean, I hated the Harry Potter series, but I still respect people who like it.  My boyfriend is the biggest HP fan I know (and kinda looks like HP...lol) and I'm gonna buy him that little treasure chest collector's edition thing of all 7 books that's like $200 (as soon as I get some money...lol).  So, I think people should agree to disagree and just respect each other.  All the obsessers can keep obsessing.  All the haters can keep hating.  And if people don't like seeing all the twilight questions on here they can just ignore them!

  15. my main problems with twilight (emphasis on the MAIN) are the

    - obsessive, rabid fans who drool over edward/jacob

    - the characters themselves (namely, bella and edward)

    - the awful messages these books send out to young girls

i think the rabid obsessive fan thing we all get already.

the characters/bella and edward? i think most people know this but i will elaborate nonetheless.

bella is weak, whiny, and a completely idiotic doormat about 98% of the time. she's just so annoying to read about, and i honestly don't care one whit what happens to her. she could go fall into a hole for all i care.

edward is a stalker, abuser, and manipulator. it makes my blood boil to see how people adulate him when he's really such a creep. ugh!

now, for messages. twilight is a book that tells you:

    - girls don't need to have their own minds, all they need to do is lean on a handsome young man, he will take care of you

    - if your boyfriend leaves you, then you mope around for 6 months or whatever and do dangerous things just so you can hear his voice. then, when he comes back, fall into his arms, swooning as if nothing ever happened

    - sure, girls are ready to get married at eighteen

    - it's good to lie to your parents and alienate your human friends so you can be with your vampire as much as possible

    - it's ok if he emotionally abuses you, he's so dazzlingly beautiful that it doesn't really matter, now does it?

must i go on? it's revolting!

and those, my friends, are the reasons that i dislike twilight.

    can we move on now?

EDIT: i am not insulting anyone. i am merely stating my opinion, all right? you wanted to know what it was, after all...

  16. i think that everyone's opinions are their own. you shouldn't be called that for your own thoughts. i don't believe that she is the best author either. i've come from reading jk rowling's books and i was really surprised that this wasn't written as well. i do think that twilight is an amazing story that lets you believe that there is something magical in the world somwhere.

  17. Well its not like some "Twilighters" don't insult everyone who doesnt like the darn book. And the repetitive questions have calmed down a bit, but theyre still here, and I think that annoys a lot of the people in the B&A section. The Midnight Sun questions are up, and they just keep being posted up, and they don't bother to use the search bar. The book is horribly written and that's a fact. Some peple think that its "THE BEST BOOK EVA!!!" and that's ur opinion, so respect ours. I dont like the books because there is not plot, the charaters are shallow, its horribly written and its just c**p. But yes, I do think theyre getting outta hand, yet when questions are put up that are bashing Twilight, I still answer them.

  18. I like the twilight saga because of the writing, stephenie meyer's writing is descriptive and some times the book is like a movie in my head. I am a very visual person so the descriptiveness of the book makes me like the book a lot more than some books i have read. Another thing i like about the book is even if u know what is going to happen you are always surprised how that thing happens!

    Hope I helped

I am also think that people should be able to give there own opinion about things but some people give there own opinions in the wrong way and they don't think about the person they are giving their opinion to and how they will feel when that opinion is given
