Question:

Does anyone think that victory gardens will make a return?

During WW2, people in America and Great Britain grew gardens wherever there was a patch of open ground. That included openings in the side walks and between buildings downtown and uptown. With the current food prices the way they are, do you think this old solution might help? Would you like to see this happen?

  1. Well we have grown a few things and those items have really fed our family of 5 this summer. We have ate lots of cucumber salads and sandwiches, watermelon, cantelopes and a neighbour gave us some squash plus a relative grew some blueberries so yes these gardens are helping alot maybe next year we will grow a bigger one and get the whole family involved.Arkansas is so hot and has so many bugs that its hard to stay in the yard for more then a few minutes at a time.We have ate an amazing amount of these things and they are so good. I may start planning to put in some root crops in the fall.

  2. How about the salmonella and e.coli and contamination scares?  Really.  Would you prefer to have your own jalapeños right now, or buy it from the store?  There's more than one reason to have a garden.

In the end though, I think it will partly depend on where people live.  In the dry American West, where water prices are extremely high even if you conserve, gardens would be a harder sale.  Where I live, you're not even allowed to gather water from the roof or in barrels to use in your gardens or lawns.

  3. yes - with the new push for local grown food, better environmental practices and need for wholesome activities that are friendly for family, people will begin to discover that gardening is one of the best things out there.

    keep digging!

  4. yep it sounds like a perfect idea. i have an allotment now, and i save a packet on vegetables. everything is so expensive.

  5. No. They should, but it will be too late by the time anybody does anything. Start planting is all I can say.

  6. I've been gardening indoors and out for years, so this would be nothing new to me. I prefer local grown produce anyway, as apposed to tainted veggies from Mexico or Cali. ;)

Hydroponics, organics, and CEA gardening will save us all. The soil is tainted from years of pesticides and petroleum based fertilizers, and now we are seeing the effect of it.

Good idea though, but what "Victory"? LOL!

  7. As someone that tore out some shrubbery and planted tomatoes, peppers, and green beans in my flower bed. YES! Any effort to help the environment, and help my pocketbook at the same time is right by me.
