  1. Sadly, Amtrak (except for it's commuter routes) is severely over priced compared to Greyhound or airlines.

I used to ride the Capitols Corridor from the Bay Area to Sacramento for weekly meetings and found THAT route to be just fine.

I also ride frequently on CalTrain and ACE.

I'd LIKE to see California get ahead of the rest of the USA and get some SERIOUS train travel in place... Amtrak California is a separate entity from Amtrak USA.

  2. many Americans do but not a majority of them. I take Amtrak daily during the summer to Milwaukee from Chicago. but official numbers from Amtrak say as of October 23, 2007 that Amtrak has had 5 strait years of ridership growth. the hole system ridership growth was 6.3% (but some indavigual routs have been 55.8% the Lincoln Service) total number is 25,847,531

  3. YES!! Are you kidding. I have a job that entails that I travel up and down the Northeast and the Amtrak Acela Express trains are ALWAYS sold on every trip! In the Northeast, people don't mind taking trains and subways, it's more urban here than most parts of the country. The Acela is so quick and comfortable. I love it!

  4. More than you think.  Ridership is up; and with the emphasis on safety that Amtrak has, expect more riders!  Of course, you might have to pay a little more -- new coaches and locomotives are a tad expensive. . .

  5. Lots of people. Most west coast trains are booked solid during the summer, especially the sleepers. I travel coast to coast every year and LOVE AMTRAK

  6. In the Northeast it is popular. The are lots of big cities that aren't that far apart. Up and down the California coast isn't too bad. (After 9/11 and all those new airport security procedures, it was a great alternative to short air flights -- until Amtrak overdid it with their own security screenings.)

Anything else is awful. I once spent 12 excruciating hours on Amtrak from Chicago to Louisville, KY (you can drive it in less than 5 hours). Gratefully, this "service" is no longer offered.

Why is there no Los Angeles - Las Vegas service? Because someone might actually want to take it. (The Amtrak bus doesn't count, and it's awful as well.)

  7. Amtrak ridership continues to grow steadily.  The current government has made an effort to shut Amtrak down, but it has not worked, and Amtrak continues to run, to grow, and to improve.

Soon the goons now in power will be gone, and programs will be in place to improve and expand rail service in the USA.

  8. I do.  My wife and I go every year with 2 other couples from Denver to Glenwood Springs, Colorado on AmTrack and have a wonderful time. We have been doing it for the last 15 years.  The scenery is wonderful and we meet new people every year.  Thanks for asking.

  9. I looked into using Amtrak once for a trip and the route went quite a few places that were out of the way of where I was going before heading to my destination town and was too expensive to consider so I don't use Amtrak.

  10. Yes, I love to travel by Amtrak. A few years ago, I used to take Amtrak from Bay Area to Sacrameto in California. The Bay Area scenery is very beautiful. Recently I travelled to Fresno via the San Joaquin express...it was pretty nice too.

    Thank you for asking!

  11. I did from san diego to New Orleans, but if you want to get somewhere fast and on time, it better to take a plane. Trains are even worse than airlines when it comes to delays. But if you like to look out the window and see the country, its tight
