Does anyone try to avoid eye contact when talking with someone?

I try to make eye contact but far too often the person I am talking with will not do the same. How can you see into a person's soul with no eye contact?

Yeah, I do a little, but I try to make some eye contact.

You wouldn't want to stare them down, but then again, you wouldn't want to seem like you're ignoring them either.

Maybe subconciously ... but I usually try to make a concious effort to make a lot of eye contact with people ... especially when it is one on one. Usually make them break away first.

This is a city dweller thing. But people who live outside the big conurbations think it means that a person is lying. Well, it often does.
