  1. I normally use 2nd...this way the transmision has more affect on keeping the wheels from spinning

  2. Better off to use 2nd gear. 1st gear is usually too snappy and won't offer enough control. I have driven several stick shift cars through the snow trust me you are going to find it easier to control the car in 2nd gear.

  3. If you have to drive on snow or ice covered roads, regardless of  whether the terrain is flat or hilly, the best bet is to have chains...If chains are not available, then starting out from a stop is best in either second or even third or fourth gear...Too much torque in the lower gears will cause the wheels to slip and spin without gripping the road surface...Always go easy on the gas and clutch.

  4. We don't have snow where I live, but I use 1st gear on steep hills. The reason is because I don't want to have to replace my brakes frequently.  The tranny keeps the torque down so the speed is reduced.

The same should hold true for snow.  Braking on snow/ice can cause you to slide. If you just use less torque to keep your car in control, you have less chance of sliding.
