  1. There is a strategy that you can use that is not difficult, and almost organizes itself.

I'm not sure what kind of book you are going to read, but if it is a novel, you can look at the characters, setting, problems encountered and tell how you connect or do not connect to each.  Maybe one of the characters reminds you of a cousin from another state.  Maybe the setting is like the land around your grandmother's house.

You can also respond by comparing this book to a previous book you've read.  Pick out some qualities that are comparable and write about them. Tell how the two books are alike and how they are different.

Another comparison you could make is between the world the characters in the book live in and the world you live in.

You could choose either of these three approaches.  You could combine two of them.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  2. Obviously, read the book (I'll assume it is fiction, but you can respond and analyze non-fiction as well). Then respond to it:  maybe sumarize the plot, do you agree or disagree with the book, what did you learn and so on, and so on.  It is difficult to say what your teacher wants you to include such as elements of literature like theme, symbolism and so on - or not. Maybe you need to ask. I think a response is different in ways than an essay.  Is it more like a review or book report? Anyway, don't put it off to the last minute.  Write your response using good organization (topic sentences and transitions) lay it aside, then re-read your paper, revise, revise and edit.  This should help get that A you deserve.
