Does baby need soy milk?

My nephew is on soy formula. He will be one year old in October, and my sister asked me if he will need to switch to soy milk instead of regular milk. So, if your baby is on soy formula for their first year, do they need to drink soy milk after a year old?

  1. Depends on why there were on soy milk?

  2. YES IF HES ALLERGIC OR IS LACTOSE INTOLERANT

  3. When my kids were babies, they drank soy too. They didn't have any trouble with milk. To be on the safe side, she may want to try 2% milk or Skim milk first and then slowly ween him to whole milk.

  4. I agree with Nurse JC. I was contemplating whether or not to but my son on soy milk bc he was colicky, and I thought it had a lot to do with my diet. Instead, I put him on the sensitive formula. Thankfully I did, because later I read that babies shouldn't be put on soy unless they have a true lactose intolerance, which could be tested by the ped. Otherwise, babies can develop an allergy to soy. I assume that if he has to be on soy, directed by hs ped., than he should stick with it. If your sister/sister-in-law put him on it at her own discrepancy, than I think whole milk should be fine. If anything, she can call her ped. and he could give her the best advice.

  5. my daughter was lactose intolerant when she was little she turned 1 years old on March 6th 2007 and she went right to whole milk and did fine and she is still on milk. so try it if he is still lactose intolerant if you give him some whole milk then keep with  the soy but he might be alright on it.. but when my boyfriend was a baby he had to be on soy then when he was one he still could not drink milk so he had to stay on soy milk. but now he can only drink skim milk. i hope this helps
