  1. With ballet, you gain muscles more than lose weight. Ballet is just a training of strength and flexibility. You can work up a sweat while doing ballet, but your not really moving around much. If you want to dance and loose weight, I'd suggest hip-hop or some form of Latin dance. Jazz could maybe help you get in shape, but you won't see major results.


  2. ballet "elongates" your muscles but the begining sclasses in ballet are more for innercore and placement. Intermediate you do alegro work wich is cardio but basically you take ballet to get flexible and coordinated. Jazz, if you look at people who do it they mostly are a little bigger in the lower half because there is a lot of isolations and knee bending. they are not quite built the same as ballet dancers unless they take ballet with it. Now African dance wich is the bassis of hip hop is an allover work out and a half. it starts off slow and the same movements get faster and faster.

    if you wan to lose weight you need to find an art that has a lot of cardio and african dance can not be matched by any other in that field.
