Does being cold directly give you a virus?

When people refer to the flu as a cold, does this mean that being cold gives you the flu, or is the flu just easily caught, and being cold just makes your immune system slower and more vunerable to the flu? I've heard some things about viruses and they don't seem to be able to be made inside you. Cold will just weaken your immune system right?

  1. In this sense the word cold has nothing to do with the temperature, its slang for a common illness.  You cannot get sick from being cold, unless you're so cold you get hypothermia.  There needs to be a virus or bacteria present to catch a cold or the flu.
