Question:

Does being quite close to power line & junction box cause connection problems using wi-fi?

we just located our RV to a site where a power line goes from the juction box to a meter grid of 5 meters. The line is about 10 ft from our RV, the computer desk (and its wi-fi antenna). Moving the antenna as far away as our 15 ft cord will allow doesn't seem to help the dropping out nor the varying signal strength, which will range from 4 bars (very good) to none (as eveidenced by the popup window "Wi-fi now connected" coming on my screen every few minutes. Will we have to request another site from the park? We are at the outer edge of the park.

  1. hmm, not too sure, i know this sounds silly but you could try wrapping tin foil around the antenne, worked for me when my signal was low

  2. It is improbable. WiFi operates at the 2.4 & 5 GHz range, and the EM fields have little effect on radio frequencies. Case in point, the RF Remote Read meter (ABB's AB1R, Schlumberger's R200, R300, & their newer C1SR comes to mind) transmits it's KWh reading over the 900MHz band, and is not hindered by the EM fields in the stator (the current and voltage coils in the meter).

It could possibly be interference from another WiFi connection, or many other things (cordless phones, even microwaves!). Check this site out, I hope it helps!
