Question:

Does being tea total make me boring?

Last night my flatmate got a crate of beers in for everyone in the flat to celebrate his new job. Anyway, since I'm tea total I just sat with them in the lounge for half an hour and then made my excuses and went to bed - and got looked at like I was the most boring killjoy on earth. Anyway they stayed up drinking until 5 this morning until they were totally drunk and playing Marylin Manson at full blast which totally annoyed me and woke me up. They also hammered on my door and called me boring when I told them to go away after they asked me to join in at 2 am. I'm more or less tea total because I just can't stand getting drunk, I hate the hangovers and everything. Does this make me boring?

  1. Well I wouldn't necessarily call you boring, but maybe a bit of a killjoy; especially if they enjoy and value your company.  That being said, your friends sound like a bunch of idiots for not respecting your wishes. Banging on your door was truly disrespectful and trumps your going to bed early.

Next time, why don't you have one or two ales and make them last 45 minutes apiece.  I know that Brits love their ales at room temperature anyway!  That way you triple your time w/ your buddies (mates) and you don't get drunk...everyone wins!

  2. Sounds like you were the only normal person there.

    Thanks for asking.

  3. I think you are very wise.

  4. I think they called you borning more because you went to bed early not so much that you weren't drinking.  Not everyone needs to drink to have a good time.  It is just alot easier to be loose and crazy when you drink.  I think if you tried to stay up later and have fun with them even without drinking they wouldn't have called you boring. When you don't drink and then go to bed in a half hour, that makes you boring. You need to learn to loosen up and have fun being sober.  I know it is hard to act loose and crazy when your sober and everyone else isn't.  Either you have to just ignore them and not let what they say bother you.  Remember they are drunk idiots, does it really matter what they think. If they make fun of you for being boring even when they are sober than I would start to think a little more.  But if they are just saying it when they are drinking then who cares. You should always be who you are and do what you want and not worry about what others do or expect you to do.

  5. If it is a group p**s up then yes you will stand out as being boring and prudish. Its abit like not dancing on the dancefloor when everyone around you is. This happened to me when I was on a friends stag do and the second night I refused to drink anymore shots. This was completeley unacceptable and I was forced to down the shots.

You could redeem your self if you have a great sense of humour and are an asset to the group psyche.

One tip is to just have one beer, and make it last for ages, so everytime your mates look at you they think you are boozing and stop hassling you to have a drink.

You dont get a hang over!

  6. I'm teetotal myself and find it is the drinkers and drunkards who are boring and boorish, i.e. those who seem to think that the only way they can enjoy themselves is through drink, and that it is quite acceptable to lose not only their inhibitions but often total control of their senses as well as any dignity they might have had, making a spectacle and a nuisance of themselves to others. While drinking has become the new national culture of Britain, I would regard as cultureless anyone who thinks there is nothing more to enjoy in life than drinking and has no ambition other than to get drunk on a regular basis. Leave your flatmates to their hangovers, headaches and vomit. If that's what they want, they deserve it. You have chosen something better for yourself.

  7. Drinking has nothing to do with it, you can have heaps of fun without getting drunk. Also others dont see you as boring if you dont drink, but if theres a party going on and you head straight to bed then maybe people might see you as being boring? you should feel proud that they want you to come join them, if they truely thought you were boring then they wouldn't bother. Go have some fun, hit the red cordial..

I can undrstand getting annoyed at loud music in the early hours of the morning, thats normal!

really just do whatever makes you happy and not worry about what others think!!

    good luck

  8. No, being tee total does not make you boring. In any way. You have the freedom to choose whether to drink or not. I know loads of tee totals who are great fun, and I am tee total myself.

What does make you boring is that, because you choose not to drink, you feel unconfident being around people who are drinking and you 'just sat with them in the lounge for half an hour and then made my excuses and went to bed'. It is perfectly possible to have fun around drunk people, Or you could just wait till they are plastered and record the stuff they do - then your fun continues into the morning, when they are hungover. You can still join in and have fun, even if you choose not to drink. If you are annoyed by their fun, I'm afraid you are being a bit of a killjoy and you need to be more accepting of the fact that they choose to drink, even if you don't.

Find a common ground. You don't have to drink, but you can still have fun.
