Does birth control really lead to infertility?

I've been on birth control for 7 years now. I have a 20 month old son. I've recently read that taking birth control for long periods of time can lead to infertility...? I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with this. I went off bc when I was ttc my first and was pregnant within 4 months of stopping. Is there a delay? I've been off bc 2 months this time...any input?

  1. Drug manufacturers would say NO.

There is going to be anacdotal stories of where it has.

One thing to consider is the fact that as you age, your fertility reduces, so anytime you go on birth control, you can expect your fertility to be less when you come back off.  So it's quite possible that by the time you get off BC, your fertility has naturally dropped so much that you might have an infertility problem.

  2. well i think it depends what kind your on. i was on the depo for 3 almost 4 years and my doc said i was infertile so he put me on chaseberry/vitex to halp me ovulate. it work 1 almost 2 months later i concieved.

  3. Well i guess it depends on which type of birth control you've been using. For instance i got off Depo in June and i'm ttc#1 (fingers crossed) and so far i haven't had a positive pregnancy test, or a normal cycle. So for me it's been hard knowing when i'm ovulating, etc... I do believe being on birth control for a long time affects your ability of getting pregnant right away. But then again, some women are luckier than others when it comes to these things...

I hope your wish comes true soon... Keep trying! =]

  4. i have PCOS & have been on birth control since i was 16 to control my periods.now i m 25 & trying to conceive & having hard time becz of long term use of pills.no it does not lead to infertility but it does decrease ur chances a lot & the chances of breast cancer or other heart problems also goes high.just dont use it for long stretches of years.
