  1. I'm not sure all players do this, but mine has a SVideo output that I used to setup the HD resolution.

Look for a SVideo jack on any unit you consider. If it has one, standard def output is likely.

ALSO: Some of the copy protection logic will down-convert the video to 480i if it suspects you are making a copy. This means standard def down conversion seems to be built into the players.

  2. blu ray is only for HDTV.  your regular TV   depending on its age  might have component inputs  these are only 720 i to  1080 i  . real  HD is 1080p  .Only HDMI is able to transfer true 1080 p signals. S video will never carry the HD signal

  3. All Blu-ray Disc players allow you to use the "composite" (yellow RCA) video output for hook up to an ANALOG televison.  All but the cheapest of Blu-ray players allow you to use use the "component" (red, blue and red RCAs) video output to an ANALOG televison for the best possible (analog) video connection.

And yes, DVD quality (what you'd get on an ANALOG television) is less than half of HD quality and less than a FOURTH the quality of what Blu-ray is capable of.  With all this in mind, you will STILL see an improvement in color, contrast and detail over standard DVD when connecting a Blu-ray Disc player (with "component" cables) to an ANALOG (480i) television.  Try it and see.

All of that aside, the REAL advantage of the Blu-ray Disc format is not the picture, it's the SOUND.  The upgrade to the "uncompressed" audio formats on Blu-ray over standard DVD is similar to the difference between MP3s and compact disc.  Click this link for some more info on the new HD audio: http://www.avtruths.com/uncompressed.htm...

  4. blurays will work with EDTVs, and if it does have a composite and/or S-Video output port it will work with a regular SDTV.

  5. Blu Ray is HiDef. don't think it will work on a regular TV

  6. Blu-Ray movies will work on normal, non-HD TVs (you might need to get some kind of adapter to plug it in; I'm not sure about that). However, if you're playing it on a standard television, you won't get the main benefit of Blu-Ray, which is the HD video. If you're using a standard television, there's no reason to buy a more expensive Blu-Ray movie because your television can't show the high definition video anyway. It will just end up looking like a normal DVD.
