Question:

Does bonita have more than one meaning in Spanish?

I learned in spanish class that bonita meant 'pretty'. That's what it said in my book, my new book, the dictionaries I've looked in, and that's what my teacher taught me.

Well, now I have a new teacher (new year...) and before, when he was still learning names, to get my attention he would call me 'bonita', instead of something like chica.

Now I HIGHLY doubt he would just randomly call a student 'pretty' when talking to them, so does it have another meaning?

  1. bonita means pretty, graceful, feminine, nice.  Perhaps he says that to students whose names he forgets.

I live in Spain and my daughter often gets called princess by both male and female teachers.

  2. No Senorita, Bonita means pretty, nothing else. Your teacher was calling you pretty.  Or to put it in our social context, he was calling you The Pretty One.

The next time, respond by saying "Thank You, how nice you noticed." Try putting it in Spanish and memorize it so you can respond smoothly.  I see an A in your future.

  3. i dont think it means pretty but its definity a complament

  4. As far as i know there is no negative connotation to the word bonita. I use it when I think something is pretty or cute.

  5. it does mean pretty....but you gotta understand that in spanish its not frowned upon to call someone based on their appearance its a term of affection. i.e. many people have nicknames such as gordito (little fat one) or bonita (pretty one) or other things, like some of my friends call me alto since im tall
