Does boxing have cup competitions?

i dont follow boxing much or know anything about it. it just occurred to me (while watching the snooker world championship) that boxing fights seem to be arranged and promoted, instead of fighters being drawn against each other.

so my question is, does boxing have competitions where the fighters are drawn against each other like a knockout cup competition, or what?

i have never heard of a boxing tournament.

am i being ignorant or not? what goes on?

thanks.

  1. Usually when a title is vacated, there will be a tournament per say. Don King has set up a few tournaments in the last few years.  Theres actually a tournament right now it involves Sam Peter, Oleg Maskaev, Wladimir Klitchko, Sulton Ibrigamov are in a kind of tournaments with the two winners of each fight will face each other for the undisputed Championship.

The reason they dont draw number in boxing like in pool is because if someone is way over matched they could get seriously hurt in boxing where as in pool the only damage would be to the ego.

In Boxing they have a ranking system, and you have to beat the guy above you and keep winning up the ladder system until you get a title shot. (or at least thats the way it is supposed to work)

  2. to much money out there. them boys don't want to take chances like that. that would really shake things up though.

  3. yes the olympics are an example of this. tournaments are done in amateur fighting while professional b/c the fights are longer and made to focus on certain boxers.

  4. u r so right. I never noticed that. Well in the professional boxing world, there are no tournaments. At least not that I know of. That would be very interesting to watch.
