Does brand name matter w/ camera memory cards & batteries? Do I need to pay more for the OLYMPUS brand gear?

I am going to MeXiCo!! for a month and I'm planning on taking at least a bazillion pictures ;-) So I'm looking for more memory cards and batteries to take with me, but I don't have a ton of money at my disposal...

My camera is Olympus FE-340 and it uses xD picture cards and LI-42B batteries.

Looking on eBay and amazon.com, I have found more batteries/memory cards "for" olympus rather than actual brand name olympus products. The non-brand name items are much less expensive!! But I don't want to risk messing up my camera...so does brand name really matter for batteries/memory cards? Can I use these other non-brand items without damaging my camera?

So far I have a 16 mb card, a 64 mb card, a 256 mb card, and a 1 gb card...how many pictures can that hold at 8 megapixels?

Thanks!!

  1. Been there done that--you have make sure it is compatible with your camera.

Even getting the brand name does not always mean it will be compatible.

They have so many letters attached to the them like M or D .

So if your camera takes a M and you don't notice it and you get a D it's not going to work!

My camera was a Olympus so I know, and yes other memory cards will fit!

If it doesn't work , you will end up spending money in shipping fees to send it back or trips to the store to return it!!

The best thing you can do is get on the net and go to the site that carries your camera and check with them!  Good Luck

  2. If Am right your camera uses XD card, make sure that you buy XD card, not SD or other type, another important factor is check if your camera can handle 1 GB card, older camera will not be able to detect the 1 GB card.

there are many non camera makers who sell memory cards (sandisk, Kingston etc) all there brands are good make sure you buy original not Chinese counterfeit.

  3. Memory cards?  There are many excellent brands of memory cards ... just be sure to buy them at a local electronics store ... not the Internet.

As far as batteries go, stick with the Olympus batteries ... they are designed specifically for your camera and have many built-in features that generic batteries do not.

  4. yes it is 100 percent sure you can use non branded cards & batt, i am highly professional photographer , so leave worries.it should compatible with your camera
