Question:

Does broccoli, cauliflower or beano cause diarrhea?

I'm on a new diet, and I've started eating raw broccoli and cauliflower in the past week for the first time ever. The first couple of times I had bad gas pains after eating it, so I started taking beano before.

The past two days I've been eating a lot more of it than before, and taking the beano. Both days I have very bad diarrhea an hour or two afterwards. And the broccoli is coming out totally undigested in it.

What is causing this? I'm pretty upset about this, because I HATE those vegetables, and I'm going to quit eating them if I'm not getting any nutritional benefit from them. Is broccoli like corn, is it supposed to come out like that? Help!

  1. Oh goodness me, steam them, you will get gas as your body is trying hard to digest these vegetables, whatever beano is I'd give it up.  Diarrhoea is serious, you may have caught a germ from the veg as they haven't been cooked, ie,  cow dung or whatever the farmer used to feed the crops.  You should seriously see or talk to a doctor, make yourself a nice stir fry or look up 'gado gado' its an Indonesian blanched vegetable dish that is so lightly cooked and has a peanut sauce and a boiled egg involved.

  2. Eat slower, chew your food!

Go to grocery store and buy "steamer bags".

You can nuke the veggies in 3 minutes. And forget the beano.  It's eating the veggies raw that is the cause.

  3. Please, please, please don't take Beano.  Beano has fish ingredients, which are obviously not vegan.

Many vegetarians make the mistake of taking beano.

  4. you can get a lot of nutritional value out of any kind of vegetable. but almost all vegetables can/will cause diarrhia. thats why when you get constipated, people say to eat vegetables. it really does help too. good luck! =]

  5. Many brassica family plants cause gastric problems, especially if you eat a lot of them.

  6. First thing, diarrhea is caused by an intestinal infection or parasite, not by what you eat. An unballanced diet can cause loose bowels, but not diarrhea. The fiber part of broccoli and any high fiber veggie will show up in your bowel movements. Just remember we may be v/vs but we are not cattle, so we can't eat just greens like broccoli and cauliflower. I'd cut down on them, and from your description I'd also call your doctor, just to be on the safe side.
