Does buy.com add tax to your orders if you do not live in the state where they are based? which is California.

  1. It depends on if the company has a 'physical presence' in your state.  For example, Amazon has a warehouse/ship center in PA, so when I lived in PA I paid state tax.  Now that I don't, I do not pay state tax.

    The reason this matters is that depending on the item purchased, it could ship from a third party warehouse that has a presence in your state, even if buy.com does not.  So even if in general they do not collect tax (Buy.com charges sales tax for orders shipped to California, Maryland and Massachusetts), it is possible on some rare items it could happen.


  2. If you purchase an item out of state and it is delivered to your home/office, there generally is not a sales tax, as inter-state purchases are exempt from state sales tax.  I don't' know where you live, so I can't speak specifically to your case.

  3. online retailers do not add tax if you are not in the state.

    on a side note, dont use buy.com.  they have horrible ratings.  just do a google search and you will find tons of bad reviews of orders being lost etc
