Does caffine enhance blood thinners?

Some lady on cumadin said her doctor told her not to drink caffine, coffee, while taking the blood thinner because it would affect the results.

  1. That does not sound right. Coffee will effect some asthma medicines. Coumadin is greatly effected by tons of things, but not coffee.

  2. No, it speeds the absorption rate, as caffeine is a stimulant. You don't want to speed up how the medication is absorbed as you will not get the full effect. Do note that aspirin is also a blood thinner so do not take any salicylates with coumadin!

  3. well.... of what i have learned... caffeine is a diuretic agent... that is it helps in getting rid of fluid from blood.. which means it thickens blood.... so  

    blood thinner + caffeine(diuretic) = no effect

    so what the doc meant was that there was no sense in taking antagonists together...
