Our free market economy means the government can't stop businesses from selling items to our supposed enemies, as described in this article.

Does this stand in the way of achieving our goals in foreign policy, or does it help us by getting other nations hooked on US goods whereby making them more willing to compromise?

  1. No, you're obviously missing the gist.

    The government has the power and responsibility to enter into trade agreements on the behalf of the people. This includes institution of embargos as part of foreign policy.

    The sellers could not do this if the government halted trade.

    Please note that the article you cite quite distinctly mentions that only certain products are allowed to be sold to Iran.
