Im 15 years old and im going to get my license in a couple of months, my parents say that when i get my lisence that im not allowed to drive unless they're in the car because i am covered by their insurance, but their insurance covers the whole car and I dont want to have to pay for my own insurance if i don't have to. So since it covers their car, is it possible for me to drive it alone without breaking the law?

  1. If you live in their house you have to be added as a driver of the vehicle to go drive it by yourself. It's very expensive on a vehicle that has full coverage.

  2. There are a couple of things going on here.  Yes, the insurance covers the car rather than the driver, but unless your parents add you to the policy, they could get into a great deal of trouble with their insurance company if you drive and get in an accident.  Really, they need to notify their insurance company as soon as you get your learner's permit, since you live in the same residence.

More importantly, the car belongs to them, not you.  They get to decide who drives it and when.  If you want access to the car, see if you can't get a part-time job to pay for your share of the insurance - which may make them feel a little better about letting you use the car.  Also, when you are all driving together, prove to them that you are a good driver who is responsible enough to drive alone.

  3. You need to be listed as a driver on their policy once you get your license.  If it's just a permit, you can drive yet must have an licensed adult in the vehicle.
