The channel number is the frequency range being used for wireless communication. The wireless adapter in your PC should pick up the channel number to connect to when it scans for a signal.

Incidentally, if there are other wireless access points using the same channel close bythen you will get interference. You might be better off using a channel which is not already being used by any other in the proximity of your network. Use a number at least 3 channels distant from any other.
