Well i am 16 and i am going to study full time at college in september. i've recently got a part time job, and stupidly told my dad (who is seriously a selfish one) that i have a part time job. now my mom is worried he wont have to pay child maintenance.

they both agreed through the court no more maintenance has to paid once i am 18. i live in the UK.

  1. Your dad is liable to pay maintenance until you are eighteen, regardless of whether you are earning money or not. This is totally clear cut in the legal system and he will not get away with not paying. Good luck in college.

  2. I live in the US....and my 16 year old has a job and we still recieve the same amount of child support (child maintenance). His father must still pay the same amount - even as our son works - as that is our sons money.

What a sad excuse for a father you have (sorry) - but how can he be so selfish that he cannot allow you to have a job and the money you make, without considering going back to court to possibly lower the amount he pays!!!!????

Also, per our divocrce agreement, if our son goes to college full-time, his father must still pay child support until he is 21 or no longer attends school full-time. My son will only be cut off from his child support, at 18, if he does not continue with his full-time education.

It appears that the laws are different in the US....but, the laws should not rule a fathers conscinece and his obligation to his child. I am sorry that your father is soooooo selfish   :(

  3. Hi,

I think maintenance has to be paid until you are 18 whether you are employed or not.

  4. Well it almost certainly will not effect the maintenance, but it would be a nice if you could offer some cash back to your Dad to show him that you don't just think of him as a bag of money. He probably wont take it, but he will think more of you.
