Everyone knows "Clean Coal" is scam. Why would we allow such manipulative and deceptive advertising? If you can't smoke in a restaurant why can you pump billions of tons of C02 into the atmosphere? When will rich concerned citizens start to purchase and shut down coal power plants?

I am absolutely sure that if they found a way to burn coal completely cleanly and sequester all the CO2 it emitted, the left would still scream bloody murder and would find some other reason to try to ban it.  These leftist seek (whether, deliberate, naive, or by being useful idiots) to destroy our economy and cause energy prices to skyrocket.  You wouldn't let a kindergartner run your finances and I sure wouldn't let these people try to run the nation's economy.  It would be a disaster and in the end more CO2 would be emitted.

Wow Doug, brilliant! I hope they start with your coal power plant first.  That way when you have no power, we no longer have to see your posts.  By clean coal most people realize they mean low ash coal. Which although not clean is a lot better than high ash coal. Although this is not a perfect solution it is better than what we had. Maybe you can invent a new source since we don't really have nuclear as a clean option.  It seems a lot of people said OMG we can't use that for power and eliminated and new plants.  Sound familiar?

I say we should shut down all the coal fired power plants immediately; they only produce fifty percent of all the power in the U.S. This would possibly in a big hurry convince you of the fact that until someone can produce power as cheap as coal fired plants we’ll have to go with what we got.  At present using any other process of producing power would triple the expense. I’m not sure the effects of this can register in your mind; economically this would destroy this nation.  Figure it out if power companies could produce cheaper power they would.  They are in the business of making money.  If you got a better way of making cheap power get on with it.

Clean coal removes smoke and sulfur and other traditional smog. But I do not think it is fair to say that the result is still dirty. Carbon dioxide is not dirty. Carbon dioxide is NATURALLY OCCURRING in the air and REQUIRED BY LIFE to be in the air. Without it all trees and other plants would die. Just like oxygen, it is NOT a contaminant. If we had some other kind of large scale industrial process that produced large amounts of oxygen as a waste product, then people might be saying anything that emitted oxygen was dirty. Saying that is no more idiotic than saying CO2 in dirty. If we doubled the amount of oxygen in the air, that would be worse for the environment than doubling the amount of CO2! But of course that would be nearly impossible to do, since there is already 600 times more oxygen than CO2 in the air. (21% compared to 0.035%)

Clean coal is not a scam.

There several significant problems with coal:

Burning it releases tons of particulate matter into the air (soot).  This causes health problems, structural damage and can even affect the local microclimate.

Most coal deposits are co-located with mercury deposits.  Burning coal releases significant amounts of mercury into the atmosphere, which, when it falls/is washed to earth gets into water, where it is converted by biotic matter into methylmercury, which causes PROFOUND problems for the food chain.  We have all the warnings about eating fish that we do because of coal plants (the primary source of mercury pollution).

Coal, like any fossil fuel, contains carbon, and when combusted releases it into the air.

"Clean Coal" technologies usually rely on gasification, using heat to convert the coal into something analogous to natural gas.  In doing so, you strip off most of the particulate precursors, the mercury and a large part of the CO2, which you can then sequester underground in the form of calcium carbonate.

Burning the 'syngas' that clean coal yields still emits carbon, but there's a bit less of it and it lacks the attendant pollutants.  

Since coal is the single greatest domestic source of energy the USA has, it makes sense to pursue this technology.
