Does closing curtains in the day and night save heat? Or does having them open heat your room in winter (UK climate)

If you have south facing windows, leaving the curtains open during the day helps warm the interior of the house.  Then closing them in the early evening helps retain the heat inside the house.

This is only effective on the south side where you have solar gain potential.  Curtains on other sides of the house with no direct sunlight will lose heat more than a standard wall does.

I don't know what the weather is like in UK but this is what I think.

If it's winter, I think it's best to keep the windows covered.

Because the sun might be bright and all, but the cold air outside will most likely come in faster.

Remember, It takes eight minutes for the heat of the sun to get to eatch, the cold is already there.

Windows that face south, will gain heat if the curtains are open during the day and closed at night, the rest of the windows should be covered because they lose heat all the time.

it depends on if the sun is bright during the day, but as for night, yes it does save on heat and helps to block leaks around windows.

At night, the extra insulation from closed curtains helps retain heat. During the day, the added light enters easily thru uncurtained windows but does nor exit as easily and gets degraded to heat. Does "greenhouse effect" ring a bell?

first glass has an r rating of less than 1 so every bit of insulation helps. Any window facing the sun, south or east in the morning west in the afternoon, the curtains should be open so the sun warms the floor which in turn warms the room as soon as the sun light has left this room close the curtains. It wont actually save you much but if your really budget conscious it helps.
